i am currenlty sat in a MS building using the Guest wireless internet, updating my LAMP blog !

After much googleing and faffing, i have managed to

• get my SIP softphone (VOIP) to connect to my asterisk box at home with out the use of a VPN
• Get RPC over HTTP email to work
• setup WEBDAV over SSL access to my file server

So I no longer need the VPN to do normal networky stuff to home, the only reason i need the VPN now is to trick Sky Anytime into thinking I am in the UK, and that is only the gui client, the peer to peer service does not give a stuff, so once i have requested the video, i can drop the VPN !

I am Glad i am NOT paying to the t-mobile WiFi usage !!

Though I would try Vista on my laptop, nothing is ever simple

NEW hard disk and some more RAM (US prices are Sooo reasonable)

install was great, than came the fun
Sky Anytime requires admin rights to run (something which Vista does not give away lightly), i then had to phone sky to tell them i had rebuilt my PC, as te ANYTIME software thought it was a different machine, the Sky Anytime helpdesk was surprisingly effecient at sorting that out !

Then there was device drivers, the modem, Card reader and web cam do not seem to come with bundled drivers, Compaq support site says they wont support Vista on ths laptop, but then they dont do 64 bit drivers for XP for it either (what is the fucking point is selling a 64 bit laptop without 64 bit OS and Drivers)
so “google is my friend” and discovered a few other laptops with the SAME crad reader chip set, and managed to down load a driver from herehttp://www.sagernotebook.com/pages/notebooks/download.cfm?ProductType=5750

not going to bother with the modem, have not used one in years !

the WEBCAM however is a different story

Well, its me again, sat in my hotel room in Seattle

due ti the fact i have NO Sci-Fi channel on the TV in my room, I thought i woudl re visit Sky Anytime, formerly known as Sky by Broadband

I??dont really like it because it is a peer to peer system and therefore a bandwidth hogger (waster if you hav to pay for it)
but he i am deperate for some decent TV, non o fthe jerry springer format stuff, which is all yoiu sem to get on network TV in Seattle

Attempt 1, Based on you IP address you are not in the UK, SOD OFF
Attempt 2, VPN to home, sorted donload starts, but how slow, competrting for bandwitdh on the 256Kb/s side of the ADSL
Attempt 3, VPN to a mates office, he has 1.5 Meg SDSL??

SORTED, still slow, but at least i get to download and watch some decent TV

A few peeps know where I work, but not what I do, I am responsible for the upkeep and improvement of the all most the entire intranet infrastructure for a LARGE PLC

Well one of the LAMP servers I manage had an outbreak of wordpress this afternoon that looked like this

but it is on an offcial server !!!I wonder how that happened

Had a call from my dad this morning, “my computer is tits up, switched it on this morning and it went BANG !”

He is an electrical heating engineer, so is no stranger to pulling electrical stuff apart, and replacing a few bit and bobs

Told him where to buy a NEW PSU (not PCWorld, glouester has a little shop with Good prices for such things)
90 minutes later, he calls back to say ??18 quid later his computer is now working again !!!

Horray !!!!!!!!!!!

Let me start at the begining,
As i own my own domain, like many IT literate people these days, I make up email address’s as I go along, depending on what I need it for, homeshopping@, mobile@, cars@ etc, I am sure you get the picture, I then run a catch all system (with some fairly heavy spam blocking, not filtering, outright blocking)

So a few days ago I get an email from a place called licenceguard to an address I used to get car insurance qoutes, insure@ as it happens

Offering me insurance against losing my driving licence, that would pay out up to ??15,000 per year for taxis etc, if I lose my driving licence, all for a ??125 premium !!!!!!!!!!

So if i get this right, some car insurance outfit sold my email address on to licenceguard, who then offer to cover my travelling expenses if I lose my licence, by say, repeatedly driving with no car insurence, becasue licenseguard was cheaper, get my drift !!!

Not someting I would do personly , but I am sure there are many that might, or even wor,se drink drive, knowing they would still be able to get to work, if they got caught and lost their licence !!!!
