What make a good technical Curriculum Vitae?
The Internet is flooded with differing opinions,
The only consistent thing seem to be lots of white space to aid reading and the following points in order

  • Personal details
  • Career Objective/Summary
  • Personal skills
  • Summary of skills (the technical page)
  • Work history (listing the most recent position first)

Outside of that, 2 pages, 4 pages, or 10 (if you have enough relevant content)
So lets say you have 4, will one of the 2 pages max HR / PIMP people chuck it straight in the shredder.?? Or you don???t have time to tweak a CV for a particular post, and they are looking for a skill you have left out to make it fit 2 pages.?? Catch22

Suggestions on a postcard !

November 13th, 2006O2 PUK Code,

No Gravatar

What a complete waste of time

my wife managed to block the SIM is one of my O2 phones

so??I called O2 on 08702410202 , got to an automated system which gave me my PUK code
and the only question it asked was the phone number !

So if i was one of those people who stick the number of my pool phone on the back of the phone with DYMO tape, the SIM PIN woudl be completely pointless

This mornings Metro (south west edition) had an article going on about the high numbers of internet hacking attacks on PCs left switched on while connected to the internet, but the article was badly written, while it did mention “unprotected PCs”, but did not say that the PC had to be “directly” connected to the internet or even mention??that for as little as ??40 can purchase a router with integrated firewall which will provide and excellent first line of defence againt 99% of the??hacks which normally take out PCs which are left swicthed on !??

I??can only assume a similar article appeared in one of the tabloids, so i will probably spend this evening being bombarded by calls from various friends and family on the matter,???? :-( :-( :-(

May 26th, 2006Email spoofing

Some FUC*&%$# \/\/ankers are spoofing my domain to send spam, AAAARRRGGGHH

As I run some fairly heavey and successful anti spam measures for my domain I run catch all, really useful for the web forms where you need and email address but don’t want to use the main one !

however over the past few days it has been filling up with bounced spam, ie stuff which is rejected and returned to its “apparent” sender

so much for sender policy framework :-(

I have got my self a virtual dedicated linux server hosted in a pucker internet datacentre,
A virtual dedicated server is a entire real installation of a linux server to which i have full root access but on a shared hardware platform, making it cost roughtly 50% less than a proper dedicated box

So this blog is no longer coming from a old DELL desktop stuffed under a desk in my home……

Now all I need is a few customers to help cover the costs

If anyone is interested it ony took me about 90 minutes to migrate this entire blog and my mambo site
I have even started to use VI line editor to make minor config changes !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now for the impressive bit :-
The ISP took 87 minutes to deliver my server after I placed the order.
now that is impressive !

February 6th, 2006137 Hour Sky plus box upgrade

No Gravatar

Over recent months i have been suffering a small dilemma, Lots of NEW TV series starting and not enough SKY+ time to keep up.
24, Stargate SG1, Stargate Atlantis, Lost, CSI LV, CSI NY, Invasion, Threshold, Battlestar Gallactica to name a few. So I set about looking at upgrade the SKY+ box from the paltry 20 hours to something a bit more useful. Remembering the Google is my friend, I found lots of places selling kits and lots of forums discussing the matter.
As you would expect it is not a simple mater of out with the old and in with the new, different boxes have different hardware features, and different firmware will support different max disk sizes.
According to most places my V1 Pace box would only take a 160G disk but the V2 would take a 250G but not a 300G, then the disk must spin up and be fully ready in under 8 seconds (apparently). There was also lost of chatter about Maxtor disks being the most suitable.?
HMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmm, I have a 300G Maxtor in a USB2 chassis is built, got to be worth a try, not outlay, so no loss???..
MORE research required.
Bingo, another forum, says use maxblast software from Maxtor to tweak the LBA value of the HD, and even suggested 274G was the MAX a SKY+ would support, got to be worth a shot.
Add ??3.99 for a set of security TORX driver from maplin, and Bob???s your aunty???s lover. One HD reporting to be 274G (250G in Real Computer Gigibaytes) installed in my SKY+ box,
Now for a Full RESET,
Services, 4,01,select, Full reset, select, confirm, and get a coffee as it is suppose to take 45 minutes on disk this big!!!

5 minutes later the BOX rebooted, my heart sank ???..
Wait for it to start up and check the menu,
SKY+ menu said 100% free, so it seems to be OK

Lets try and record some stuff, So I set it to record two programs at the same time (3 hours worth in total) and went out

Now it is crunch time,
First has it recorded both programs ??? ? ? YES !!!!
Second how much space did it use??? ? ? ? ? 2%.

YEEEE HAA, I have a working 137Hr Sky plus box

Have you ever tried buying a buger in Mcdonalds, Just a burger, No Fries, No drink etc etc. If so then i guess you are familier with the barage of rediculous questions. So now lets go to PCWORLD to buy a laptop. YES, i brought a Laptop in PC world. I wanted a new machine for video editing and anything else I wish to do, having decided not to buy a desktop machine, I did my research and decide to buy either a Compaq R4025EA or a R4065EA .The 4065 being the bigger machine, but the is easier to get hold of. And dixons group seem to have exclusive retails rights to Compaq kit… So Off to PC world we go.

PCW: “Can i help you ?”
ME: “I woudl like to buy a compaq R4065 Laptop Please”
PCW: “I have not heard of that one”
ME: “Your Web site says you have one in stock”
PCW: “I would not believe that if i were you” Pause…., Tap tap tap on stock computer
PCW:“OH! we have 3 in stock..” PCW then proceed to tell me, Very inacurately, all about this laptop he has never heard of
PCW: “We have an excelent range of Laptop Bags”
ME: “Got one”
PCW: ” I have added the PCW support pack to the price, you will need this if you have any problems, ”
ME: “No I dont want it, Just a Laptop Please”
PCW: “Without a support pack we cannot help youwith any setup or software problem”
ME: “Thats Fine”
PCW: “no you dont understand, you wont be able to bring it back to us if there is non hardware problem”
ME: “I do understand, and i still dont want a support pack”
PCW: “You Will Need some anti virus software”
ME: “No I have some”
PCW: “Are you sure ”
ME: ” YES !!!!!”
PCW: “You may not be able to transfer the licennce”
ME: ” Surely that is my problem to sort out, I would just like to buy a laptop”
PCW: “How would you like to pay, we have some good buy now pay later deals”
ME: “Debit card ”
PCW: “OH”

Finally ! I have my laptop, NO ! not quite PCW now have to right an essay on the back of the Reciept, stating that I refused to buy any of the extras, Probably just his way of sulking because he got no commision on the support deal !!!

PCW: (closing Comment) Now dont forget you dont have ANY software support sir !
The only thing that was missing was “Would you like fries with that sir ?”

June 16th, 2005Mobile Phone (Orange)

Well after being an Orange customer for over 10 years, I have finally had enough of there so called customer service.?
I was looking into upgrading my peronsonal phone to either 3G or a PDA type device. They were unable / refused to offer me the same deal as a new customer , desipte several calls to their so called retentions deptartment and their new adverts about treating existing customers with the SAME respect as new ones.
It even took me an hour to convince them to issue a PAC. However ironically the delivery of the PAC code was the most impressive bit of the whole argurment, it arrived by SMS before i could hang up the phone !
so i am now the proud owner of an O2 XDA11i complete with my original orange phone number
